A little history…….
While living in Van Wert, James B. Smith had a home built at 503 N. Market which was designed by the architects George F. Barber & Co., out of Knoxville, Tennessee. (photos show design pages). On April 15, 1892, James B Smith wrote to the architects: ”GENTLEMEN – I am more than pleased; I am delighted with my house. My builder, who is a man of wide experience in this line, tells me that the ”plans” you furnished for my house were simply perfect in every detail, and he found them the easiest to ”work out” of any he had ever had. The style of my house is unusual in this part of the country and has attracted a great deal of attention. The first question usually asked is: ”Who is the architect?” I cheerfully recommend your services to any contemplating building, and tell them by all means to write to you and they will have no cause for regret. Wishing you abundant success, I am cordially yours, JAMES B. SMITH, Secretary of Leeson Cooperage Co.”
